Grow, Innovate, Succeed! We have an incredible opportunity for Cadet’s within the Engineering function at I&J in Table Bay Harbour, Cape Town. The purpose of this role is to provide cadets an opportunity to learn and work on-board a fishing vessel and this being the first step to reaching an Officer ranking on-board.

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports to: Engineering Manager

Key Performance Areas
Maintenance and Safety:

  • Assist the Engineering Officers in maintaining the vessel’s main engines and running and maintaining all mechanical equipment. This includes the operation and maintenance of pumps and fuel systems, electrical generating and distribution equipment, refrigeration, air conditioning plant, lifts and cranes

Engine Room:

  • Engineering Cadets assist in the Engine control room, under the supervision of the Engineering Officers
  • Assist and understudy the ship’s Engineering Officers in their duties
  • Participate in engineering watches to learn watch-keeping requirements as directed by the Engineering Officers
  • Proactively engage with the officers and crew aboard to benefit professional knowledge and development
  • Execute assigned duties safely, follow work procedure to the best of your ability and report any hazardous condition without delay to the Duty Officer

Port Work:

  • Assist with Dry Dock operations

Records:

  • Complete tasks as listed in the Engineering Cadet on-board training record book

What It Takes to Succeed:
Experience that set you up for success:                       

  • No experience required, but previous engineering work is advantageous

Qualifications & Certifications that will contribute to your success:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • CPUT applicants must have completed a minimum S2 or in the process of completing a National Diploma in Maritime Studies Semester (S) courses in engineering
  • Northlink College applicants must have completed Diesel Fitting or Mechanic Theory and a minimum of Diesel Fitting Phase 1 and 2
  • Internal applicants from I&J, must possess a Grade 12 certificate. This requirement considers the level of maritime industry experience already held by such applicants.
