Shape the Future with Us! A rewarding opportunity awaits a skilled BOILER SHOP FOREMAN at I&J in the Waterfront, Cape Town. Your role will be to perform duties as required by the company and ensure compliance to policies, procedures and operational requirements of the Cape Town Fishing division.
Reporting Structure:
- Reports to: Marine Technical Manager
- Direct Reports: 8
Key Areas of Impact:
Manufacturing, Maintenance and Repairs
- Manufacture all parts required for the vessels when alongside or during outage.
- Maintain a high standard of quality to all repairs completed as per the deadline and within project timelines
- Identify areas or parts which require further investigation for replacement in the future, providing a report of possible RCA.
- Ensure all workshop duties are fulfilled in compliance of the Health and Safety regulations.
- Coordinate morning meetings with teams to understand the requirements and priorities of the workshop for the day as well as current status of work being completed.
- Submit daily updates to the Marine Technical Manager with regards to:
Manage all special projects which are in progress either on the vessels, quayside or in the dry dock.
Supervision of Staff
- Supervising the maintenance and repair of fishing vessels and quayside maintenance at all times.
- Prioritize plan of action in regard maintenance and repair demands.
- Report any defects and repairs to the necessary Manager.
- Ensuring that scheduled maintenance and repair work is carried out in the turnaround period with a minimum of overtime.
- Ensure safe work environment at all times.
- Liaise with Superintendents and the Vessel Engineers regarding the repairs.
- Maintain a good working relationship between Engineering Shore staff, Seagoing Engineers and Skippers to promote greater co-operation, efficiency and motivation.
- Coordinate all staff requirements in terms of planning for overtime and weekend work in conjunction with the Marine Technical Manager.
- Provide a constructive plan to manage additional hours in advance to ensure proper manpower allocation.
- Complete Individual Performance Appraisals (IPA’s) and Development plans with staff.
- Plan all staff leave cycles ensuring the correct staff compliment for any operational requirements.
- Provide mentorship and training to all learners and apprentices within the workshop and company.
Administration Duties
- Ensure all costs are kept within the operation budget and maintain high standards.
- Timecard checks for daily planning.
- Approve all SAP workflows on the system.
- Check and verify all Best Time clocking in’s for efficient and correct payments.
- Submit all required payroll information as per deadline demands.
- Ensure pre-approval of overtime for any workshop staff.
Material and quotation approval and requirements
- Liaise with external parties for any workshop material required for ongoing projects.
- Submit quotations to the procurement staff for purchase orders and payments.
- Track and report all quotations on a monthly basis to the Marine Technical Manager.
Housekeeping, Policies and Procedures
- Ensure good housekeeping practice at all times.
- Ensure compliance to the Lock out procedure for safety purposes.
What It Takes to Succeed:
Experience that set you up for success:
- Minimum 4 years as a Senior Artisan or Team Leader in a similar role and environment
- Minimum 2 years working experience in a Marine environment
- Minimum 2 years 1st Line Supervisor experience
Qualifications & Certifications that will contribute to your success:
- Matric / Grade 12 or Technical NQF4 qualification
- The ideal candidate will hold a Trade Test qualification in Boilermaking.
- Completed Supervisory or Leadership certificate – advantageous
Additional Requirements that will enhance your impact for success:
- Solid PC Literacy - including MS Word, Excel and Power Point knowledge
- Working experience on SAP
- Required to travel to sites, or overseas travel when required.
