Grow, Innovate, Succeed! We have an incredible opportunity for a 1st MATE at I&J in Waterfront, Cape Town. In this role, you will assist the Skipper in meeting all the requirements of the fishing vessel, either wet or Freezer Vessel. In terms of safety, compliance, fishing, maintenance, gear and crew.
Reporting Structure:
- Reports to: Skipper
Key Areas of Impact:
Watch keeping and Fishing
- Navigate the vessel within the fishing grounds, exit and entrance to port in compliance with regulations
- and safety protocols.
- Watch for other vessels in distress and be cautious of any obstacles which may affect the vessel or any other vessel.
- Perform fishing during the night when Skipper may be off duty.
- Manage the fixing, correction of broken nets and wires on board the vessel.
- Provide updates to I&J operations with regards to daily tallies, performance and docking dates and times.
Administration
- Ensure that nautical administration is kept up to date dependent on the requirements.
- Verify vessel SAMSA certification to ensure validity and compliance.
- Ensure vessel complies with all DAFF requirements in terms of: Fishing logs, training of crew, disposal and spills.
- Complete the logs for the vessel for example, Deck Log, Radio Logs and Medical Logs.
- Complete crew list for crewing department and have required VMT sign off for submission to payroll.
- Request PPE from stores during turn around.
Management
- Ensure that the crew comply with all regulations, policies and procedures as governed by I&J.
- Management of the crew relating to leave and shore leave in conjunction with the Crewing department.
- Ensure the compliance of COC for all Officers on board the vessel, escalate any deviations to the HR or Crewing department for correction.
- Take disciplinary action against any crew member who has breached or committed a misconduct on the vessel. Provide proof of this action to the HR Department to place on permanent record.
Health and Safety
- Provide on board induction for all new crew boarding the vessel.
- Provide training in terms of emergency drills, fire drills, man overboard, abandon ship drills, oil spill or confined space to ensure safety compliance.
- Ensure all crew members are kept updated on SAMSA notices and provided with the required training if need be.
Training and Development
- Provide the crew with compliance training in terms of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in the factory and on the vessel.
- Identify persons with potential for development on the vessel and inform HR and the Shore Skipper.
- Complete assessments of the Deckhands and 2nd Mates to further develop needs and requirements.
What It Takes to Succeed:
Experience that set you up for success:
- Minimum 8 years in a vessel or marine environment
- Minimum 24 month’s as a 1st Mate sailing on a fishing vessel
- Knowledge and understanding of SAMSA
- Fishing vessel experience
- Experience with Max Sea Navigational system
- Marport fishing technology experience
Qualifications & Certifications that will contribute to your success:
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Certificate of Competency as Skipper less than 24m in limited waters
Additional Requirements that will enhance your impact for success:
- Required to travel on a vessel for a period of 7 days or 30 days dependent on wet or Freezer vessel
